Chief Scientist Carl Nelson makes steel pipes howl using a propane torch.
Inside each pipe is a small metal screen that is heated until glowing hot. Air warmed by the screen creates a turbulent air flow in the pipe that moves upward. After a moment, pressure oscillations build in air column that resonate at single frequency determined by the length of the air column.
