A long arc for tig welding does not take advantage of the precision arc that is possible with the TIG (GTAW) process.
in this video I am welding 1/4″ thick (6mm) thick steel at 160 amps.
Amperage is kept at 160 for both long arc and tight arc.
what a difference a tight arc makes.
the long arc causes the puddle to wander, and the filler rod can ball up and blob into the weld puddle making things uneven.
a tight arc allows you to feed the rod evenly into the puddle and that allows for more uniformity
