The MIG welding procedure to weld square tubing to flat bar can be done in the forehand or the backhand welding directions.
When MIG welding a filet joint like this it’s easy for me to weld in both directions since there is a clear spot to see where the metal meets.
However, when GMAW welding (aka MIG) in the backhand position on a butt joint it’s kind of difficult to see where you’re going since the MIG nozzle is blocking your line of site.
The most important thing to remember whether you’re flux core welding or metal inert gas welding (MIG) is to always tack weld the joint before doing a final weld.
Making sure you tack weld your work piece is important because when your welds start to cool they will bend the workpiece out of shape.
So, if you have tack welds you will greatly minimize the workpiece from warpage.
